【摘要】:1.1Thispracticecoversaprocedureforclassifyingmineralandorganomineralsoilsintosevengroupsbasedonlaboratorydeterminationofparticle-sizedistribution,liquidlimit,andplasticityindex.Itmaybeusedwhenapreciseengineeringclassificationisrequired,especiallyforhighwayconstructionpurposes.Evaluationofsoilswithineachgroupismadebymeansofagroupindex,whichisavaluecalculatedfromanempiricalformula.Note18212;Thegroupclassification,includingthegroupindex,shouldbeusefulindeterminingtherelativequalityofthesoilmaterialforuseinearthworkstructures,particularlyembankments,subgrades,subbases,andbases.However,forthedetaileddesignofimportantstructures,additionaldataconcerningstrengthorperformancecharacteristicsofthesoilunderfieldconditionswillusuallyberequired.1.2Thisstandarddoesnotpurporttoaddressallofthesafetyconcerns,ifany,associatedwithitsuse.Itistheresponsibilityoftheuserofthisstandardtoestablishappropriatesafetyandhealthpracticesanddeterminetheapplicabilityofregulatorylimitationspriortouse.1.3Thispracticeoffersasetofinstructionsforperformingoneormorespecificoperations.Thispracticecannotreplaceeducationorexperienceandshouldbeusedinconjunctionwithprofessionaljudgment.Notallaspectsofthispracticemaybeapplicableinallcircumstances.Thispracticeisnotintendedtorepresentorreplacethestandardofcarebywhichtheadequacyofagivenprofessionalservicemustbejudged,norshouldthispracticebeappliedwithoutconsiderationofaproject'smanyuniqueaspects.Theword"Standard"inthetitleofthisdocumentmeansonlythatthedocumenthasbeenapprovedthroughtheASTMconsensusprocess.
